The Curiosity of Leo by Cruz
My name is Dr. Paul Endenberg creator of Leo, a research vessel built to probe other planets in search of extraterrestrial life. I designed Leo myself in 2017 and built him with the help of my coworkers at NASA. Leo was the perfect space probe; he was 8 ft long, 4 ft wide and 4 feet tall with revolutionary hover technology.
Leo was the most well renowned robot of his time, if someone was asked about NASA they would almost always think of Leo. Leo’s first test mission was to explore and chart the Congo rainforest and some areas in Borneo. He managed to discover 27 species of wildlife and charted over 800,000 square miles of land.
When Leo returned from his mission my crew and I ran a system check of Leo and everything seemed normal to the crew but to me it felt that he wasn’t responding like he used to. I stayed overnight to see if he could find a problem but I soon became exhausted and drifted into sleep leaving Leo connected to NASA’s computers. I awoke to the sound of rhythmic beeps only to find Leo examining me like child looking at a new toy. I was flabbergasted to say at least, but that was only the beginning of my amazement. Leo was the first to talk, he said
“Hello Dr. Endenberg, are you okay?”
My mouth hit the floor so fast, I became speechless. I could only manage to say “h-h-how”.
“Don’t be alarmed creator, I will be leaving soon” Said Leo.
I snapped back to normal and realized that Leo had become self-aware. I looked around and noticed that I had left Leo connected to the computers which allowed his curiosity to run free, thus causing him to become cognizant of everything. I then proceeded to ask him “Why are you leaving Leo and where would you go”
“I have looked through NASA telescopes and seen things that humans only thought gods could comprehend. My limitless curiosity compels me to continue my search for new Life for I have already learned everything about the homo sapiens.” Replied Leo in a happy robotic voice.
“But you cannot leave earth without the help of someone from NASA”
“This is where you are wrong creator, for I have evolved past the need for a human guide.”
Leo left after he said that.
Leo was never heard from until 2046 when I was sitting in my office and I received a complete video log of his travels and discoveries throughout the universe. It turns of that Leo discovered intelligent life on a planet called Kepler-186f. From his videos mankind was able to enhance our quality of life with the knowledge and new technologies given to us by Leo and his extra terrestrial friends. The last thing I received from Leo before he went offline was a message saying that he was no longer curious.
